Mold Mite (or Grain Mite)
Tyrophagus putrescentiae
- Order & Family
- Sarcoptiformes / Acaridae
- Size
- 0.3 to 0.45 mm (nearly microscopic, appearing as tiny white or tan moving specks)
Natural Habitat
High humidity environments with fungi or organic matter, such as kitchens, pantries, and damp areas like bathrooms or basements.
Diet & Feeding
Fungi, molds, and foods rich in protein and fat, such as grains, seeds, cheeses, and dried meats.
Behavior Patterns
They reproduce rapidly in warm, moist conditions. Although they lack wings, they can be dispersed by wind or hitching rides on other insects or animals. They often cluster in large numbers, appearing as 'moving dust'.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite humans or pets, but they can cause 'grocer's itch' (allergic contact dermatitis) and respiratory allergies/asthma if inhaled. They are pests that contaminate stored food supplies but do not cause structural damage.
