Natural Habitat
Often found indoors in homes, museums, and warehouses, particularly in carpets, closets, and around natural fibers. In nature, they are found on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers (wool, silk, fur, feathers), dried plant material, and dead insects. Adults feed primarily on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and are often seen near windows. Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They undergo complete metamorphosis with egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Larvae can cause significant damage to clothing, carpets, upholstered furniture, and museum specimens. They do not bite or sting humans, but their bristles can cause skin irritation. Benefits: In the wild, they are pollinators and help break down animal matter.
