Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, under baseboards, beneath furniture, and within wall voids where organic debris accumulates.
Diet & Feeding
The larval stage feeds on natural fibers and dried organic material including wool, silk, fur, feathers, dead insects, hair, and pet dander.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae are slow-moving and avoid light. They undergo several molts, leaving behind hollow, fuzzy-looking shed skins. They can remain in the larval stage for months to over a year depending on food availability and temperature.
Risks & Benefits
The larvae are significant household pests that can damage clothing, carpets, and upholstery. Additionally, their stiff hairs (hastisetae) can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. They do not bite humans.
