- Hymenoptera: Formicidae
- Size
- 1.5 to 2 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Indoor environments, particularly in heated buildings like hospitals, apartment complexes, and kitchens; nests in wall voids, under floors, and behind baseboards.
Diet & Feeding
Opportunistic omnivore; highly attracted to proteins, fats, and sugary liquids. In hospitals, they have been known to feed on wound secretions.
Behavior Patterns
They exhibit 'budding' where a portion of the colony moves to a new location, making them difficult to control with sprays. They are primarily nocturnal or active in low-light indoor conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Significant indoor pest and health risk; they can mechanically transmit pathogens such as Salmonella, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus. They have no significant ecological benefit in human-dominated indoor environments.
