Natural Habitat
Found indoors in carpets, upholstery, closets, and storage areas containing natural fibers or animal products.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on dry organic matter including wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, pet food, and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas and undergo multiple molts. They are often spotted when they crawl out of carpets onto walls or furniture to pupate.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or spread disease, but their stiff hairs (hastisetae) can cause skin irritation or 'carpet beetle dermatitis' in sensitive individuals. They are significant pests that cause damage to clothing, blankets, and textiles.
