Natural Habitat

Damp, warm, and dark places with a food source, such as under wallpaper, in books and papers, stored food products, and in wall voids. They thrive in high humidity.

Diet & Feeding

Fungi, mold, starch (from books, wallpaper, glue), grains, cereals, and other organic matter. They do not bite humans or pets.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and reclusive, often found in large aggregations when conditions are favorable. Many species reproduce parthenogenetically (without males). They are often mistaken for mites.

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered a nuisance pest, especially when their populations grow large. They can damage books, papers, and stored food products. They do not transmit diseases or cause structural damage. Their presence can indicate high humidity, which can lead to mold growth and other issues in a home.
