Natural Habitat
Typically found in turfgrass, meadows, pastures, and decorative lawns across the Southeastern United States.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous; nymphs and adults feed on the sap of various grasses (including Centipede and St. Augustine grass) and some woody ornamentals like hollies.
Behavior Patterns
Nymphs produce a protective white frothy mass (spittle) to stay hydrated and hide from predators. Adults are active jumpers and are frequently attracted to porch lights at night.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans but can be a significant agricultural and lawn pest. Heavy infestations can cause grass to turn yellow or brown and eventually die. They do not pose health risks to people or pets.
