Natural Habitat
Normally found in residential dwellings, hotels, and shelters; hiding in cracks, crevices, mattress seams, and bed frames near their host.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophages, meaning they feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, primarily humans. Feedings usually occur every 5-10 days.
Behavior Patterns
Primarily nocturnal insects that are most active just before dawn. They go through five nymphal stages, requiring a blood meal to molt between each stage. They are known for their ability to hitchhike on clothing and luggage.
Risks & Benefits
While not known to transmit diseases, their bites can cause intense itching, allergic reactions, and secondary infections from scratching. They also cause significant psychological distress and are difficult and expensive to eradicate.
