Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the thin film of bacteria, fungi, algae, and organic matter (the gelatinous film) found in drains. Adults typically feed on nectar or polluted water.
Behavior Patterns
Poor fliers that often crawl on walls. They are nocturnal and are frequently found near domestic plumbing. They have a fuzzy appearance due to hair-covered wings.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans but can be a nuisance. In large numbers, they may transport bacteria from drains to food surfaces. Larvae play a minor role in decomposing organic matter in sewage systems.
