Silverfish

Natural Habitat

Found worldwide in moist, humid environments, especially within homes (basements, bathrooms, kitchens, attics) where they can hide in dark crevices.

Diet & Feeding

Polyphagous scavengers that feed on carbohydrates such as sugars and starches. Common food sources include paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste, glue in boxes, clothing (cotton, linen), and dried food products (flour, oats).

Behavior Patterns

They are nocturnal and photophobic (move quickly away from light). They do not fly but scuttle rapidly. They can live for several years and molt throughout their adulthood.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: While they do not bite or spread disease, they are considered household pests because their feeding habits can cause significant damage to books, documents, photographs, wallpaper, and clothing. Benefits: None in a household setting, though they are decomposers in nature.
