German Cockroach Egg Case (Ootheca)

Scientific Name: Blattella germanica (ootheca)

Order & Family: Order: Blattodea, Family: Ectobiidae

Size: 6 to 9 mm (approx. 0.25 to 0.35 inches) long

German Cockroach Egg Case (Ootheca)

Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in warm, humid areas near food and water sources such as kitchens, bathrooms, behind appliances, and inside cabinets.

Diet & Feeding

This is an egg case containing developing embryos, which do not feed externally. The adult female carries the case while the embryos feed on yolk reserves inside the eggs until they hatch.

Behavior Patterns

Unlike many other roach species, the female German cockroach carries the ootheca protruding from her abdomen until about 24 hours before the eggs hatch. A single case contains about 30 to 40 eggs arranged in two parallel rows.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: This egg case is a sign of a potential infestation. German cockroaches are significant household pests that contaminate food, spread pathogens (like Salmonella and E. coli), and produce allergens that can trigger asthma. Benefits: None in a household setting; they decompose organic matter in wild environments but are primarily pests in human dwellings.
