American Giant Millipede

Moist, dark environments such as leaf litter, under decaying logs, moss, and rich forest soils

Detritivore; feeds primarily on decaying plant matter, rotting wood, leaf litter, and fungi

Nocturnal and slow-moving. When threatened, it curls into a tight spiral to protect its head and soft underside, and can secrete a mild defensive liquid containing benzoquinones.

Benefits: Important decomposer that enriches soil nutrients and breaks down organic waste. Risks: Harmless and non-venomous; its defensive secretion can cause minor skin or eye irritation in sensitive individuals, but washing hands after handling prevents issues.
