Mold Mite

Natural Habitat

High-humidity environments, organic matter with mold or fungal growth, kitchens, pantries, and damp areas within buildings.

Diet & Feeding

Mycetophagous; primarily feeds on fungi (mold), yeast, and decaying organic matter rich in proteins and fats like cheese and grain.

Behavior Patterns

They congregate in large numbers on food sources when humidity is high. They undergo four life stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult, and can reproduce rapidly under ideal conditions (70% humidity or higher).

Risks & Benefits

Risks include potential allergic reactions (asthma or dermatitis) in sensitive humans and contamination of food supplies. They do not bite but are indicators of excess moisture and mold growth in the home.
