Natural Habitat

Orchards, gardens, fields, and deciduous forests; they frequently enter human dwellings in autumn to seek warmth for overwintering.

Diet & Feeding

Polyphagous herbivore; feeds on over 100 species of plants including fruits (apples, peaches, citrus), vegetables, and ornamental plants using piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Behavior Patterns

Known for releasing a pungent odor from scent glands when threatened. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult) and are strong fliers that aggregate in large numbers during the fall.

Risks & Benefits

An invasive agricultural pest that causes significant damage to crops. They are a nuisance in homes but do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases to humans. They have no significant ecosystem benefits in their invasive range.
