Blattella germanica (for German Cockroach), or other species within Blattodea.
- Order & Family
- Order: Blattodea, Family: Blattidae (or Ectobiidae for German Cockroach)
- Size
- Typically 1.1 to 1.6 cm (0.43 to 0.63 in) for German Cockroaches. Other cockroach species can range from a few millimeters to several centimeters.
Natural Habitat
Prefers warm, humid environments, commonly found indoors in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and utility rooms, especially near food and water sources. Outdoor habitats include sewers and drains.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous scavengers, feeding on almost anything organic, including food scraps, crumbs, pet food, grease, soap, glue, and even other cockroaches when food is scarce.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal; hides in dark, moist places during the day. Known for rapid reproduction rates; females lay egg cases (oothecae) multiple times throughout their lives. Highly resilient and adaptable.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Considered a significant household pest. Can contaminate food, spread bacteria (like Salmonella and E. coli), allergens, and other pathogens. Their presence can trigger asthma and allergy symptoms in sensitive individuals. Benefits: In natural environments, they play a role as decomposers, recycling organic matter. However, their benefits in an indoor human environment are negligible compared to their pest status.
