- Extremely small, approximately 0.5 mm to 1 mm in length (often look like moving specks of dust).
Natural Habitat
Commonly found in bird nests (sparrows, pigeons, starlings). When nests are abandoned, they migrate into homes and buildings.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily the blood of birds; however, they will bite humans and other mammals if their primary host is unavailable.
Behavior Patterns
They are highly active and exhibit rapid movement. They are most active at night or in high humidity. They cannot complete their life cycle on human blood but can survive indoors for several weeks.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include intense itching, skin irritation, and dermatitis in humans. They do not transmit diseases to humans but can cause significant emotional distress and secondary skin infections from scratching. No ecological benefits to humans.
