Springtail
Scientific Name: Over 8,000 species, so no single scientific name. Examples include Hypogastrura aspera or Folsomia candida.
Order & Family: Order: Collembola (though sometimes considered a class or subclass, within Arthropoda). Families can vary, but common ones include Entomobryidae, Isotomidae, and Sminthuridae.
Size: Typically very small, ranging from 0.2 mm to 10 mm, but most commonly less than 6 mm.

Natural Habitat
Springtails thrive in moist environments, both indoors and outdoors. Outdoors, they are common in soil, leaf litter, rotting wood, and under bark. Indoors, they can be found in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, around leaky pipes, potted plants, or any area with high humidity and decaying organic material.
Diet & Feeding
Mainly feed on decaying organic matter, fungi, algae, and bacteria. Some species can also feed on plant roots, though this is less common for species found indoors.
Behavior Patterns
Springtails are known for their ability to jump using a furcula, a spring-like appendage tucked under their abdomen. They are often found in damp environments and reproduce quickly under favorable conditions. They are active primarily in moist conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Generally considered harmless to humans and pets. They do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases. Indoors, a large presence can indicate a moisture problem. Outdoors, they are beneficial decomposers, contributing to soil health and nutrient cycling.
