Natural Habitat

Dark, damp, and humid environments such as bathrooms, basements, attics, kitchens, and laundry rooms. They are often found in cracks, crevices, and behind wallpaper.

Diet & Feeding

Starchy substances and polysaccharides including paper, glue, book bindings, photos, sugar, hair, dandruff, and organic fabrics like cotton or linen.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and moves quickly with a wiggling, fish-like motion. They avoid light and are known for their ability to survive distinct periods (weeks to months) without food. They molt continuously throughout their adult life.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Considered a household pest because they damage property (books, documents, clothing, wallpaper) by feeding on them. They can also contaminate food and trigger allergies in some people. Benefits: They do not bite humans or transmit diseases, and they act as scavengers cleaning up organic dust and dead insects.
