Carpet Beetle Larva (likely varied carpet beetle)
Trogoderma variabile (or similar Dermestidae species)
- Order & Family
- Coleoptera, Dermestidae
- Size
- 2-5 "mm" (larva)
Natural Habitat
Indoors, especially in areas with stored natural fibers (wool carpets, upholstered furniture, pet hair, stored food products like grains and dried meats), also found in bird nests and animal carcasses outdoors.
Diet & Feeding
Keratin-based materials (wool, hair, feathers, leather), dried insects, dried food products (grains, pet food, spices).
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are the damaging stage, often hide in dark, undisturbed areas. They molt multiple times, leaving behind 'shed skins'. Adults are attracted to light and flowers, where they feed on pollen and nectar, then return indoors to lay eggs.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause significant damage to natural fiber textiles, carpets, clothing, furs, and stored food products. Their hairs can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Benefits: In natural ecosystems, some species play a role as scavengers, consuming animal remains and dried organic matter.
