Natural Habitat

Found in deciduous forests across much of the eastern and southern United States, often near rotting wood and logs.

Diet & Feeding

Adults are thought to feed on other insects or subterranean grubs found in rotting logs; larvae (grubs) eat decaying wood.

Behavior Patterns

They are nocturnal and frequently attracted to lights at night. They spend much of their time in or under decaying logs where they breed and development occurs.

Risks & Benefits

They are harmless to humans. As decomposers, they benefit the ecosystem by breaking down dead wood and recycling nutrients back into the soil.
