Fruit Fly

Scientific Name: Drosophila melanogaster

Order & Family: Order Diptera, Family Drosophilidae

Size: 3 to 4 mm (about 1/8 inch) in length

Fruit Fly

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in homes, restaurants, and grocery stores where fermenting organic matter like ripened fruits and vegetables are present.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae and adults primarily feed on yeast and bacteria associated with decaying and fermenting matter, particularly moist plant materials and sugary substances.

Behavior Patterns

Active year-round indoors; they have incredibly fast reproductive cycles, being able to develop from egg to adult in about 8-10 days in warmth. They are attracted to the smell of fermentation.

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered a nuisance pest. While they do not bite or sting, they can potentially contaminate food with bacteria and pathogens picked up from the decaying organic matter they frequent. They are highly beneficial to science as model organisms in genetic research.
