Natural Habitat
Found near moist areas containing organic matter, such as bathroom drains, kitchen sinks, sewers, and basement floor drains.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the gelatinous film of organic slime (algae, bacteria, and fungi) found in drains; adults feed on liquid carbohydrates and water.
Behavior Patterns
Poor fliers that often crawl on walls. They are nocturnal and are attracted to light. Their life cycle from egg to adult takes about 7 to 28 days depending on temperature.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or sting and do not transmit human diseases. However, they can be a nuisance in large numbers and may mechanically transport bacteria from drains to food surfaces.
