The larval stage is the destructive phase of the life cycle; they avoid light and prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They undergo several molts before pupating into adult beetles.
Risks & Benefits
They are nuisance pests that can damage natural fiber fabrics and upholstery. Their stiff hairs (setae) can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, though they do not bite or sting.
