Bird Flea

Natural Habitat

Bird nests, particularly those in hollow trees, nest boxes, or under eaves of houses. Often found in poultry houses.

Diet & Feeding

Adults are hematophagous, feeding on the blood of birds and occasionally mammals. Larvae feed on organic debris and adult flea feces within the nest.

Behavior Patterns

They exhibit a jump and cling mechanism to find hosts. They are most active in spring when birds return to nests. They undergo a complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult).

Risks & Benefits

Risks include painful bites, skin irritation, and insomnia for the host. While they prefer birds, they can bite humans, causing itchy red welts. They have no significant ecosystem benefits and are considered pests.
