Natural Habitat

Humans, specifically the hair and scalp.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate ectoparasites that feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are wingless and cannot fly or jump; they move by crawling. Eggs (nits) are glued to the base of hair shafts. They can only survive 1-2 days away from a host.

Risks & Benefits

Cause intense itching due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. While they are not known to transmit disease-causing pathogens, heavy infestations can lead to secondary bacterial infections from scratching.
