Natural Habitat

Found exclusively on humans, primarily in the pubic hair or other coarse body hair (eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, chest hair).

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophage; feeds exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are sedentary and move slowly. They use specialized large claws to grasp coarse hairs. Eggs (nits) are glued to the base of hair shafts; the life cycle from egg to adult takes about 2-3 weeks.

Risks & Benefits

Causes intense itching (pruritus) due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. While they do not transmit diseases, heavy infestations can lead to secondary skin infections from scratching. They are typically spread through close physical/sexual contact or infested linens.
