Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera, Family: Dermestidae
Size: 2 to 3 mm (about 1/16 to 1/8 inch) in length

Natural Habitat
Typically found indoors in carpets, closets, and darker areas where natural fibers are stored. Outdoors, adult beetles are found on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural animal fibers like wool, fur, feathers, silk, and dead insects. Adults feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
The adults are often seen near windows trying to get outside. The damage is done by the hairy larvae, which graze on fabrics in dark, undisturbed areas. They have a complete metamorphosis life cycle.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to human health (they do not bite or sting), though larval hairs can cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals. They are significant household pests, capable of destroying clothing, carpets, and museum specimens.
