Bagworm Moth Larva
Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis
- Order & Family
- Lepidoptera: Psychidae
- Size
- 1/4 inch to 2 inches (6 mm to 50 mm) in length.
Natural Habitat
Found on various host plants including conifers (juniper, arborvitae, cedar, pine) and deciduous trees (maple, oak, sycamore).
Diet & Feeding
Larvae are generalist feeders that consume the foliage, needles, and sometimes the bark of their host tree.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae construct a protective silk case covered with bits of leaves and twigs from their host plant. They carry this 'bag' while feeding and eventually pupate inside it. Adult females are wingless and never leave the bag.
Risks & Benefits
Significant pests in landscaping and forests; heavy infestations can completely defoliate and kill trees. They provide a food source for birds and certain parasitic wasps.
