Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar. Larvae feed on natural fibers, animal hair, feathers, wool, dead insects, and dried food stored in pantries.
Behavior Patterns
They exhibit complete metamorphosis. Adults are often seen near windows as they try to fly outdoors to find flowers. Larvae avoid light and prefer dark, secluded areas where they can feed undisturbed.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or transmit disease; however, larval hairs can cause allergic reactions (dermatitis) in sensitive individuals. They are significant household pests known for damaging textiles and stored goods.
