Case-bearing Clothes Moth (Larva)

Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, basements, and attics, often on carpets, wool clothing, or upholstered furniture.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on natural fibers of animal origin including wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and leather. Can also feed on pet hair and synthetic fibers blended with natural ones.

Behavior Patterns

The larva constructs a portable, silken tube-like case around itself, often incorporating debris and fibers from its environment (which helps camouflage it). It drags this case around as it feeds and will retreat inside when disturbed.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Does not bite or sting humans, but is a significant household pest that causes damage to clothing, rugs, and natural fiber textiles. Benefits: In nature, they help break down keratin-rich animal remains, but have no direct benefit in a household setting.
