Plant juices; they utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the sap of cactus pads.
Behavior Patterns
Sessile (stationary) as adults. Females secrete a white, waxy, cotton-like substance for protection, which often hides their bright pink or red body underneath.
Risks & Benefits
Economic benefit: Source of carmine dye (natural red food coloring). Risk: Can be a pest to cactus plants, causing yellowing or death of pads if infestations are heavy.
