Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on pollen and nectar. Larvae feed on natural fibers, animal products, and organic debris such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dead insects.

Adults are attracted to light and often found near windows. They undergo a complete metamorphosis. Larvae are slow-moving, hairy, and prefer dark, secluded areas where they scavenge for food.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered a household pest as larvae can cause significant damage to household fabrics and specimens. Some individuals may experience 'carpet beetle dermatitis,' an allergic reaction to the fine hairs of the larvae.
