Natural Habitat

Typically found in fields and gardens during the warm months; they enter houses and buildings to hibernate during autumn.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on flower nectar and juices of ripe fruit. The larvae are parasites of earthworms.

Behavior Patterns

Unlike houseflies, they are slow-moving and often crawl on surfaces. They are known for gathering in large groups ('clustering') in attics or wall voids to overwinter.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered a nuisance pest in homes but do not pose health risks as they do not lay eggs on human food. Benefits include contributing to the ecosystem through pollination as adults.
