Drain Fly Larva
Psychodidae family
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera, Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- 3 to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Moist, organic-rich environments such as sewage drains, sink pipes, septic tanks, and wet compost.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on sludge, slime, and microscopic organic matter (biofilm) that accumulates on the inside of pipes and drains.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae live within the gelatinous film of drains; they have a breathing tube that allows them to survive in near-liquid environments. They eventually pupate and emerge as small, fuzzy, moth-like flies.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and do not bite. They represent a nuisance and signify a buildup of organic matter, but their feeding helps break down gelatinous clogs in plumbing.
