Natural Habitat
Found inside buildings, particularly in human sleeping areas such as mattresses, bed frames, and floorboards.
Diet & Feeding
Strictly hematophagous, feeding on the blood of mammals and birds, with a preference for human blood.
Behavior Patterns
Primarily nocturnal, coming out at night to feed while hosts are sleeping. They have a flattened body shape that allows them to hide in narrow crevices and go through several nymphal stages between egg and adult.
Risks & Benefits
They are a significant public health nuisance, causing itchy, red welts and potential allergic reactions; they also cause psychological distress and sleep deprivation. While not known to transmit diseases, their infestations are difficult and costly to eradicate.
