Case-bearing Clothes Moth (Larval case)

Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, basements, under rugs, and in stored clothing. They are cosmopolitan in distribution.

Diet & Feeding

The larvae feed on keratin-rich natural fibers like wool, fur, silk, felt, feathers, and lint. They may also eat synthetic blends if they contain animal fibers.

Behavior Patterns

The larva builds a flattened, silken case around itself, covered in debris and fibers from its food source. It carries this case wherever it goes and can turn around inside it to feed from either end. The adults are nocturnal and weak flyers that tend to scuttle rather than fly.

Risks & Benefits

Risk: They are a significant household pest, capable of causing extensive damage to carpets, rugs, tapestries, woolen clothing, and upholstered furniture. Benefit: In nature, they help break down animal matter like feathers and carcasses (detritivores).
