Natural Habitat
Arid regions and deserts of the southwestern United States and Mexico, specifically near mesquite trees.
Diet & Feeding
Suction-feeding on the sap of mesquite trees (Prosopis species), particularly the seed pods and tender new growth.
Behavior Patterns
They are diurnal insects often seen congregating in large groups on mesquite trees; they undergo incomplete metamorphosis with bright red and white nymphs that look significantly different from the brown adults.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans but can produce a foul-smelling liquid from scent glands if threatened; they are minor pests of mesquite trees but usually do not cause permanent damage.
