Natural Habitat

Commonly found in damp soil, leaf litter, and on the surface of snow near the base of trees in temperate forests.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on decaying organic matter, fungi, algae, and bacteria.

Behavior Patterns

Known for their ability to jump using a tail-like structure called a furcula. They appear on the snow on sunny winter days to forage and mate. They contain a glycine-rich protein that acts as an antifreeze, allowing them to remain active in freezing temperatures.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans, pets, and structures. They are beneficial to the ecosystem as decomposers, helping to break down organic material and recycle nutrients back into the soil.
