Fungus Gnat

Natural Habitat

Damp environments, primarily indoor houseplants, greenhouses, and moist soil containing decaying organic matter.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on soil fungi, algae, and organic mulch; they may also damage plant roots. Adults do not eat and primarily liquid-feed on water or nectar.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are weak fliers and are often seen 'running' across surfaces or flying erratically near light sources or damp soil. They have short lifespans of about one week.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. They are considered household pests because they can damage the root systems of ornamental plants and facilitate the spread of plant diseases like Pythium.
