Natural Habitat

Found in meadows, gardens, and pastures throughout the United States, Southern Canada, and Mexico.

Diet & Feeding

Broadleaf plants and grasses, including dandelions, plantain, clover, and birch tree leaves.

Behavior Patterns

The larva is known for overwintering in a frozen state by producing a cryoprotectant. It curls into a tight ball when disturbed and eventually metamorphoses into the Isabella Tiger Moth.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans; they benefit the ecosystem as pollinators in their adult moth stage. While their hairs can cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals, they do not possess stinging venom.
