Silverfish
Scientific Name: Lepisma saccharinum
Order & Family: Order: Zygentoma; Family: Lepismatidae
Size: Usually between 0.5 to 1 inch (12–25 mm) in length.

Natural Habitat
Typically found in dark, damp areas with moderate humidity levels, such as basements, attics, kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and under sinks. They prefer environments of 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on carbohydrates, particularly sugars and starches. Common food sources include paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste, clothing (starch), glue, oats, dried pasta, and sometimes dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Silverfish are nocturnal and move very quickly in a fish-like wiggling motion (which gives them their name). They are secretive and avoid light. They can survive for long periods (weeks or months) without food.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite, sting, or carry diseases, so they pose minimal direct risk to human health. However, they are considered household pests because they can cause significant property damage by eating paper goods, books, wallpaper, and clothing. They can trigger allergic reactions in some individuals.
