Natural Habitat

Indoors, especially in undisturbed areas like under furniture, in closets, carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, and stored textiles.

Diet & Feeding

Keratin-based materials such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, and taxidermy. Also feeds on dried animal products, pet food, and sometimes plant-based materials.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are typically slow-moving and prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They molt several times before pupating. Adults are often found near windows as they are attracted to light, or outdoors feeding on pollen.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include damage to fabrics, clothing, carpets, and other household items made of natural fibers. They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans. Benefits are negligible, though, in nature, some dermestid beetles are scavengers.
