Silverfish
Lepisma saccharina
- Order & Family
- Order: Zygentoma, Family: Lepismatidae
- Size
- Typically 10-19 mm (0.4-0.75 inches) long, excluding their tail-like appendages.
Natural Habitat
Silverfish prefer dark, damp, and cool places. Common indoor habitats include basements, attics, bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. They can also be found in storage boxes, bookshelves, and closets. Outdoors, they may live under rocks, bark, and leaf litter.
Diet & Feeding
Silverfish are generalist feeders and consume a wide range of carbohydrates and proteins. Their diet includes starches present in books, paper, wallpaper glue, textiles (cotton, linen, silk), cereals, dried foods, and even dead insects. They can survive for long periods without food if water is available.
Behavior Patterns
Silverfish are primarily nocturnal and very secretive, preferring dark, damp places. They move very quickly and are agile, allowing them to hide easily. They can live for several years and undergo multiple molts throughout their lives, even as adults. They are known for their 'fish-like' wiggling motion when they run.
Risks & Benefits
Potential Risks: Silverfish are considered household pests. They can cause damage to books, documents, wallpaper, clothing, and other starchy or cellulose-containing items. They do not bite humans or transmit diseases. Potential Benefits: In natural ecosystems, they play a minor role as decomposers by feeding on organic matter, though this benefit is negligible in urban settings.
