Acorn Weevil
Curculio glandium
- Order & Family
- Order Coleoptera, Family Curculionidae
- Size
- 4 mm to 8 mm (excluding the long rostrum or snout)
Natural Habitat
Oak woodlands, forests, and parks where oak trees are present.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on oak leaves and the soft inner tissue of young acorns; larvae feed exclusively on the nutmeat inside the acorn.
Behavior Patterns
Females use their long snouts to drill holes into green acorns and lay their eggs inside. Once the acorn falls to the ground, the larvae chew their way out and burrow into the soil to pupate, which can take 1 to 2 years.
Risks & Benefits
They are harmless to humans and pets. While they can decrease the germination rates of oak seeds, they serve as a vital food source for birds, small mammals, and soil-disturbing organisms.
