Plaster Bagworm

Scientific Name: Phereoca uterella

Order & Family: Order: Lepidoptera, Family: Tineidae

Size: 8 to 13 mm (0.3 to 0.5 inches)

Plaster Bagworm

Natural Habitat

Typically found inside houses, on walls, or under furniture. They prefer humid climates and are often found in dark corners or high up on walls.

Diet & Feeding

The larvae feed on spider webs, wool, human hair, and silk from other insects or discarded clothing fibers.

Behavior Patterns

The larva constructs a protective silk case (the 'bag') and drags it along as it moves. The case is open at both ends, allowing the larva to turn around and feed from either side. They undergo complete metamorphosis inside the case.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered minor household pests because they can damage natural fibers like wool rugs or silk clothing. They do not bite or pose a direct health risk to humans, but their presence can indicate a high humidity level indoors.
