New Guinea Flatworm

Natural Habitat

Damp, humid environments, often found under logs, leaf litter, or flowerpots in tropical and subtropical regions.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous predator; primarily feeds on land snails, earthworms, and other soil invertebrates.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and highly invasive. It follows the slime trails of its prey to track them. It reproduces sexually and is known for its ability to survive in various climates across the globe.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: It is a major threat to biodiversity and represents one of the 100 worst invasive species worldwide, as it can decimate native snail populations. It is also a potential paratenic host for the Rat Lungworm parasite (Angiostrongylus cantonensis), which can cause meningitis in humans if the worm is handled or accidentally ingested. Benefits: None in non-native ecosystems; it disrupts the natural balance.
