Natural Habitat
Typically found on or near boxelder, maple, and ash trees; often moves to buildings for winter shelter.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous, primarily feeding on the seeds, flowers, and leaves of host trees (especially female boxelder trees).
Behavior Patterns
They are gregarious, often congregating in large groups on sun-facing walls. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (egg, nymph, adult).
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and trees; they are considered nuisance pests when they enter homes to overwinter. They do not bite or sting but can stain fabrics with excrement if crushed.
