Omnivorous; they eat roots, tubers, and turf grass, as well as earthworms and small soil-dwelling insects
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and fossorial (specialized for digging). They use powerful shovel-like front legs to burrow and males can produce a loud chirping sound from their tunnels to attract mates.
Risks & Benefits
Primarily considered a pest because their tunneling and root-eating can damage lawns and crops. They are harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting.
