Community identification
Fruit fly nymph / larva
Drosophila melanogaster (typical)
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera, Family: Drosophilidae
- Size
- 1 mm to 5 mm depending on developmental stage
Natural Habitat
Typically found on decaying organic matter, such as overripe fruit, or on moist surfaces in kitchens, drains, and compost bins.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on yeasts and bacteria found in fermenting organic materials.
Behavior Patterns
The larva migrates and burrows into organic material to feed before climbing to a dry spot to pupate. They have a very rapid life cycle, often maturing in about 1-2 weeks.
Risks & Benefits
Primarily considered a nuisance pest in households; however, they can potentially transfer bacteria and pathogens from decaying matter to fresh food. They are highly beneficial in scientific research as model organisms for genetics.
