Lawn Shrimp or Terrestrial Amphipod

Natural Habitat

Damp soil, leaf litter, and mulch; often found in garden flower beds or under potted plants. They may enter homes during heavy rains or drought to find moisture.

Diet & Feeding

Scavengers that feed on decaying organic matter and soft plant tissue (detrivores).

Behavior Patterns

They are primarily nocturnal and require high moisture levels to survive, as they lack a waxy cuticle to prevent desiccation. They are known for hopping when disturbed. Once they enter a dry indoor environment, they quickly dehydrate and die, often turning a reddish-pink color.

Risks & Benefits

They are harmless to humans, pets, and structures. They do not bite or sting. In the ecosystem, they are beneficial as decomposers that help recycle nutrients into the soil.
